Over the weekend, WFAA reports that Chandler Self took the first place finish for women in the 2017 BMW Dallas Marathon with a time of 2:53:58. In an incredible display of sportsmanship and sheer will, Self was assisted by Ariana Luterman, a high school runner from Greenhill Academy who ran the last couple of miles of the 26-mile course as part of a relay. Self’s body buckled in the homestretch of her 26th mile.

What was happening to Self in the final stretch of the race? London Marathon Coach Martin Yelling told the BBC, “At the end of a marathon runners usually have given so much physically that their energy levels are completely depleted – the term is hitting the wall. What that means is your body is struggling to find enough physical energy to move forward, the body is trying to tell you to stop.” He says that it takes “incredible mental strength” to push forward while one’s body has completely run out of fuel to keep moving.

Watch Self’s amazing finish in the video below, and see how quickly she was able to recover to speak with the news on the same day before she headed back to her home in NYC.
