San Antonio welcomes Sergio Marcel Gomez as the first baby born in the city at 12:22 a.m. on January 1, 2018. KENS 5 writes that this little bundle of joy weighed 7 pounds, 9 ounces and came into the world at Northeast Baptist Hospital.

Zack Hedrick, a local news reporter, tweeted pictures of the baby, his happy parents, and the hospital staff right after they rang in the New Year with a new life. Sergio looked serene as he had his little eyes clothes and he was all bundled up to stay warm on the unusually cold New Years Day. “Parents Alicia Andrews and Sergio Gomez have been living in San Antonio for almost 10 years,” Hedrick wrote.

According to News 4 San Antonio, for the past 18 years, hospitals across the city communicate with each other to figure out who gets the honor of being the first baby born in the New Year. San Antonio’s Baby New Year receives a special gift package that includes wonderful items such as a “…$75 Target gift card and Spurs onesie donated by Methodist Healthcare System,” an “…infant car seat and portable playpen donated by University Health System,” and even “…a $10,000 scholarship donated by the University of the Incarnate Word”!
