Readers of Southern Living Magazine were asked to make submissions on their favorite small southern towns for the publication’s annual compilation of the top ten. Based on charm, history, and of course, character, selections were made from “…cool hamlets to beach burgs…” and provided online via their social media postings. All 10 reader selections have several indicators in common, including a thriving downtown core, locally-owned businesses (as opposed to the alternative of miles of big box stores), a bit of an artsy flare, friendly atmosphere, and a beautiful location. And without a doubt, they’re all fantastic places you should try to see at least once in your lifetime, but our preference, of course, was for number two on the list.

The top small town selection by the magazine’s readership was Beaufort, South Carolina, which is a picturesque coastal town that was described by a reader as, “…a homey, comfortable in between,” to the larger cities it’s centered amongst. And second on the list (which is saying something, considering the size of Southern Living’s readership,) was Fredericksburg, here in the Texas Hill Country. The caption for its listing identified it as, “…a historic downtown straight out of a Western, this German town has a happening food, brew, and winery scene.” Now that’s telling it like it is!

Of course, had there been an opportunity for more to be said, we definitely would have been able to offer it up, such as its beauty, its charm, the rich Texas Hill Country history, and the great quality of life that can be had in Fredericksburg. With so much to see and do, including boutique and antique shopping, great wine tastings and tours, and wonderful city and countryside scenery, Fredericksburg’s honor of making it on the top 10 listing of small southern towns based on reader submissions to Southern Living Magazine comes as no surprise, and is truly well-deserved!
