Students to Receive Three Free Meals a Day From HISD This Year

Getting students back to school will be beyond complicated for the Houston Independent School District (HISD). District officials have been forced to make quick plans while everyone deals with personal problems from Harvey, as well.

Thankfully, there’s one tiny light in a sea of issues. CBS reports that HISD will be able to offer all students free meals, three times a day, for the entire 2017 – 2018 school year.

“This was made possible after receiving approval from USDA and the Texas Department of Agriculture to waive an application process for the National School Lunch/Breakfast program,” the news writes. The district hopes this alleviates some stress from families financially and maybe even emotionally knowing that their children will have full bellies throughout the school day.

But students won’t receive the free meals until September 11, 2017, when classes resume. ABC 13 reports that the district announced their return date for school on Thursday, and the week-long break is “dependent on weather and facility conditions,” and whether or not they will have enough staff to resume classes.

When students return, school uniform rules will be relaxed, and bus routes from shelters will be put into place. HISD officials haven’t been able to assess the state of most of their schools yet.
