Based in North Carolina, The Fresh Market announced that it would close all of its Texas locations on May 18.

Of the eight locations throughout the state, none will remain open. As The Consumerist reports, the company will also be closing all of its stores in Iowa, Missouri, and Kansas, also. Currently, there are 175 storefronts in 23 states – soon there will be 13 less.

The CEO of the company, Rick Anicetti, said that “it was a difficult but necessary step with the end goal of producing a strong, more agile company.” Recently, the chain itself was acquired by Apollo Global Management in a $1.36 billion deal.

The Fresh Market couldn’t compete with H-E-B, Kroger, Whole Foods, and Walmart in the Heartland states. Four stores are in the Houston metro area specifically – and let’s be honest, it’s hard to compete with H-E-B on any grocery store front.
