'The Grand Tour' by George Jones: A Legendary Hit

On Aug. 31, 1974, George Jones earned his sixth No. 1 hit with “The Grand Tour”. Since its release, the track has become known as one of the signature songs from Jones’ incredible career, and one of the most recognizable songs in country music history.

The song was written by songwriters Norro Wilson, Carmol Taylor and George Richey and produced by Billy Sherrill. The track honestly tells the story of a man who is grappling with the loneliness and pain of divorce. As Jones narrates the journey through his empty home, the pain and longing in his voice cuts through like a knife.

In 2013, Jones announced a 60-city tour, fittingly named The Grand Tour, which was to be the last of his career. Sadly, he passed away on April 26, 2013, before the tour could ever take place. In lieu of what would have been the Possum’s last show, a group of the biggest stars in country performed a tribute concert at Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena later that year. George Strait chose to honor the country legend with his own rendition of “The Grand Tour” during the sold-out event.

Although he may be gone, Jones’ incredible musical contributions will live on for decades. Watch the video below to see George Jones perform “The Grand Tour”.
