A German Discount Grocery Store is Headed for Central Texas

Have you heard of ALDI? If you haven’t, it’s probably because the German discount grocery chain doesn’t have any locations in Central Texas…yet. The Statesman writes that ALDI will open their first Austin-area store in Pflugerville at 1415 FM 685 on November 2.

ALDI division vice president Karla Waddleton states, “Our high-quality products and everyday low prices make for a combination our competitors just can’t match. Our stores are simple to navigate, so it’s easy for shoppers to get in, get what they need and continue on with their day knowing they left with a shopping cart full of groceries that fit their lifestyle and save them money.”

In addition to lower pricing, customers will notice that ALDI has a different way of doing business than other grocery stores. Their stores are significantly smaller, about 15,000 square feet, and customers pay a quarter to get a shopping cart from the parking lot which they will later return to the front of the store to retrieve their quarter.

On their website, ALDI states that customers should bring their own bags or purchase a reusable bag in-store. Also, “A typical ALDI store stays open during the most popular shopping hours. Staying open later would simply add labor costs – and raise our prices.” With all of their decisions, ALDI reinforces that they’re all about saving money and passing on the savings to the customer.
