Did You Catch Google Doodle’s Ode to Selena Earlier This Week?

On October 17 (Tuesday), Google Doodles (who creates the cute, interactive, and educational animation and drawings periodically surrounding the search box on Google’s main page) displayed an ode to Selena Quintanilla-Pérez. But many fans were left wondering – why October 17th? It wasn’t Selena’s birthday, nor the anniversary of her death.

Chron.com says that the drawing was chosen to grace the most popular search engine’s homepage on Monday because it marks the anniversary of her “…self-titled album, which was released Oct. 17 1989, and provides a nice bookend to Hispanic Heritage Month. That album included the songs ‘Sukiyaki,’ ‘Contigo Quiero Estar’ and ‘Besitos.'”

In addition to displaying Selena’s likeness and signature color (purple) on their homepage, Google Doodles also created a cartoon video of the singer’s rise to stardom. The clip captures her bubbly personality, closeness with her family, and love for her music. Even if you missed out seeing her on the search engine’s homepage, you can still see the 90-second video below.
