Silent Won’t Finish the Fight Against Cancer: Got Your Back 5K

Head athletic trainer for the Athletic Department of Intercollegiate Athletics at Texas State University in San Marcos, David M. Gish, passed away from a courageous battle with cancer in September of 2014. To honor him, Texas State Athletic Training and Sports Medicine Organization is holding its 3rd Annual Got Your Back 5K to be held in San Marcos, Texas on April 10, 2016. Registration is ongoing until April 9, 2016 at 5 p.m. A $30 registration fee will be required from April 1- April 9, and will increase to $35 on race day. The race will be held at the Five Mile Dam Park, 440 S Old Stage Road, San Marcos, Texas, with registration and packet pick up at 7 a.m. and the race starts promptly at 8 a.m. This race will benefit the Bobby Patton Endowed Scholarship at Texas State University and a Bobcat family fighting against cancer.

In 2016 an estimate of 1,685,210 new cases of cancer will be diagnosed.

Approximately 595,690 are expected to die from cancer.

The most common projected types of cancer will be: breast cancer, lung cancer, prostate cancer, colon cancer, rectum, bladder, thyroid, kidney, renal, pelvis cancers, Melanoma of the skin, and leukemia.

The approximate mortality rate with people diagnosed with cancer is 171.2 per 100,000 for men and 145.4 per 100,000 for women.

People living beyond cancer diagnosis are approximately 14.5 million in 2014 and are expected to increase in the future.
