A visit to Houston, Texas can be done for any number of reasons; often for a vacation, sometimes for personal business, and once in a while for some much-needed retail therapy. Houston has much to offer in the way of shopping. Recognized as the fourth largest city in America, it also has a reputation for being a style hotbed of the South. Home to over a dozen unique shopping areas, with everything from vintage to high-end, Houston speaks for the shopping bag that has yet to be filled and given a good home by some unsuspecting purchaser. But one thing of great value it has, which many shoppers should be paying attention to, is The Guild Shop. Showcasing resale-for-charity, this 50+-year-old enterprise has a history of quality merchandise, the support of philanthropic Houstonians, and a client base which has voted it “Best Resale Shop” in the Houston Press, four years of the past seven.

Started in 1962 by the St. John the Divine Women’s Sewing Group, and now managed by the Episcopal church, The Guild Shop is into its 55th year of operation. Fully stocked with everything from shoes and handbags, to top-of-the-line designer clothing, household art, and even jewelry – much of which is donated by benevolent citizens who perhaps needed extra closet space. No matter the reason, as a shopper, you can find some fantastic deals, and have peace of mind in knowing the proceeds are going to a worthy cause.

The Guild Shop is staffed entirely by volunteers, and 100 percent of profits are donated to the residents of Baytown, Texas’ St. James House. A home for the elderly, this Episcopal Diocesan Retirement Center has benefitted from the store’s contributions over the years, which has amounted to more than $4.5 million. These contributions, thanks to shoppers such as yourself, go to assist people of all denominations who have run out of money nearing the end of their life. Popular for a large selection of upscale consignment items, and for its charitable nature, The Guild Shop sells furniture, modern household items and clean resale products in the name of charity. Open Monday through Saturday, the store is located at 2009 Dunlavy St. in Houston. Be sure to consider donating to the shop as well as taking your large heart there, because you just never know what others may need and what you might find while you’re giving of your pocket book to a worthy cause such as this.
