Half of Child’s Brain Removed Successfully at Texas Children’s
Sammy suffered from awful seizures, and in order to find relief for the brave 8-year-old, Texas Children’s Hospital performed a major surgery where half of Sammy’s brain was removed. This life-changing event took place earlier this year, and Sammy’s parents are happy to report that their child is thriving.
KHOU reports that her recovery was swift. “Just hours after surgery, Sammy was able to tell her parents she loved them,” they stated. After her hemispherectomy, the little girl no longer has to deal with seizures.
A hemispherectomy is referred to as a “radical” procedure by The Hemispherectomy Foundation. They note that it is only performed when there are no other options for the person who is suffering from seizures coming from one side of the brain. It’s rare that the surgery is done for other reasons which may include bacterial infections or trauma.
Texas Children’s Hospital posted Sammy’s story to their Facebook page on Monday. In the comments, mother Sandra Schiffli Salerno wrote, “I saw that story online and love it! What a remarkable recovery. Our daughter had same procedure and surgeon back in 2013. Texas children’s has done a good number of hemispherectomy’s!”
Even though this rare procedure is difficult to perform and go through, it’s evident that having the professionalism of Texas Children’s Hospital on one’s side propels kids to incredible recoveries.
