Bet you didn’t know we had our very own theme song in the Texas Hill Country, did you?

Or maybe you did. Regardless, it’s always fun to go back and listen to early recordings from the patron saint of Texas and country music himself, Willie Nelson.

The Gershwin Prize-winning singer originally recorded it for his 1968 concept album Texas in My Soul, after it was written by fellow country legend Cindy Walker as a tribute to President Lyndon B. Johnson, while the Hill Country native was sitting in the oval office.

That’s a whole lotta Texas packed into one song. Nothing wrong with that.

We owe it to Willie for bringing the love of the Hill Country widespread attention, even though neither the song or album charted. Given the subject matter, it is notable however that single “San Antonio” from the record made it to #50. In another honor, “The Texas Hill Country Theme” would go on to become adopted by President Johnson as his official theme song.

Willie has since performed it on both on set lists and by requests during his numerous tours throughout the country and the world.
