The 2 p.m. showing of the film was scheduled for the Edwards Greenway Grand Palace Theater. Parsons, who was a graduate of Klein Oak High School in Houston, purchased all the tickets and then posted an Instagram update that the showing would be free for those who wished to attend. His move was inspired by Spencer, who had done the same at a screening in Los Angeles the week prior. Hearing from people who have experienced discrimination first hand, Parsons felt moved to follow in her footsteps.

Via email to the Houston Chronicle, Ted Melfi, director of “Hidden Figures,” said, “Inspired by Octavia Spencer’s buyout of a theater in Los Angeles last week for low-income families, the rest of the cast and crew has followed suit. Jim Parsons has bought out the showing in Houston, Taraji P. Henson has covered showings in South Side Chicago and D.C., Janelle Monáe has bought one in Atlanta, Pharell Williams has purchased two in Virginia, and Co-Producer Kimberly Quinn and myself covered two in Missouri.” All showings were free on the basis of first come, first served.

The storyline of the film follows the true details of Katherine Johnson (Taraji P. Henson), Dorothy Vaughan (Octavia Spencer), and Mary Jackson (Janelle Monáe), three black women who had integral roles in the success of the 1960’s Mercury space program with NASA. Parsons role is that of Paul Stafford, a lead engineer that originally impedes Johnson’s efforts to assist in the launching of a manned spacecraft. The story defines the times and the issues of some truly amazing people. Word from the set was that all actresses and actors did amazing jobs in their creativity, ability, and efforts in bringing the story to life.
