Stretch of Highway U.S. 190 is Now Part of the New Interstate 14
Officials in Killeen dubbed the piece of Highway U.S. 190 between I-35 and Copperas Cove “Interstate 14.” The 25-mile long section of road marks the first part of I-14 that will one day connect El Paso to Savannah, Georgia.
KXXV writes that the Texas Department of Transportation invested over $120 million into the highway to bring it up to Interstate standards. Local officials hope that being a part of the major road will elevate the economy of the area, but beyond encouraging visitors, I-14 will also be used by the military.
Rep. Hugh D. Shine told KDHNews that the Interstate will “strategically link Fort Hood and military installations across the southern United States with ports on the Gulf Coast… [facilitating] the deployment of military assets whenever necessary for our national defense.”
The Greater Killeen Chamber of Commerce celebrated the highway upgrade during a ceremony at the Central Texas College’s Anderson Campus Center where they unveiled the new road signs that will let drivers know they’re cruising down the new Interstate 14. (Though the signs will not be completely updated and installed until August or September.)
