There is no doubt that the Hill Country loves dogs. Austin most especially loves groups and organizations that support rescue dogs. This is also true of Charlie Moss, a local Austin artist who has a penchant for pooches, especially rescued pooches! Charlie knows rescues and has three rescued dogs of her own that keep her busy and entertained when she isn’t painting. Charlie retired a couple of years ago and has since set to work fulfilling a life-long passion. Painting has been something Charlie has loved for a long time, but retirement allowed her to focus on her art more actively. Judging from the drawings done by her 6-year-old grandson, which adorn one of the walls in Charlie’s home, it seems artistic ability runs in the family.

Charlie’s art pops with vivid colors and simple backgrounds that highlight the subject matter. Her paintings range in size from small to large, but her art effectively captures the personality of each of her subjects. Using photographs, she takes time to make sure she captures the expressions and unique characteristics of each pet she paints. In talking to Charlie regarding her process, it was clear that she thinks about each dog and their personality as she works to recreate them.

While dogs are Charlie’s most typical subject, she has done other pets, including reptiles. Currently she is working on a sulcata tortoise. She has also painted special-needs pets. She did a wonderful job of capturing handsome Oliver, a one-eyed rescue with a history of abuse, now happy in a loving home.

Charlie’s Facebook page, Mom Paints Pets, demonstrates the support and love she shares with her family. A new website is under construction, but Charlie can be reached at her Facebook page for commissioned pieces at reasonable prices.
