These are what many consider the “dog days of summer” — the hottest days of the year in the Texas Hill Country. By now, we are all going a little stir crazy sitting inside waiting for it to cool down. No worries! Just because it’s hot outside, doesn’t mean there aren’t any cool events to get you out of the house.

This week, we go shopping! Not just any kind of shopping, but the kind of shopping that brings communities together. From farmer’s markets to yard sales, there will be plenty of goodies to sift through that will cater to anyone’s tastes. Bring plenty of water and head out to one of these fine events this week:

Hotter Than Hell 100-Mile Yard Sale Where will you begin? This is the mother of all yard sales, and should be considered mandatory to yard sale aficionados everywhere! This yard sale starts in Castroville and ends in Brackettville. It includes a whole slew of Hill Country towns and cities including Uvalde, Knippa, Sabinal, D’hanis, and Hondo. Not only will there be random odds n’ ends for purchase, there will be antiques, theater events, and city-wide markets! August 5 – 7, 2016.

Hill Country Happenings Stargazing

Bandera Market Days Held once a month, Bandera’s Market Days is a good way to go out and support local businesses, farmers, and non-profit organizations. From farm goods to baked goods, there will be plenty of wholesome goods to stock your fridge and pantry with. There will also be plenty of unique trinkets to peruse. Free. First Saturday of every month. 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. Courthouse Lawn, Bandera, Texas.

Stargazing at the Park Get a little closer to the stars of the Texas sky with the astronomers from the San Antonio Astronomical Association. If you have never participated in a stargazing event hosted by Texas Parks and Wildlife, then you are in for a real treat. Bring the kiddos! The will love every minute. The event is free, however, if you are not an annual pass member, you will need to pay the park entrance fee. 9 p.m. – 6 a.m. Lost Maples State Natural Area, 37221 F.M. 187, Vanderpool, Texas.
