The Hill Country River You Don’t Know

This scenery never gets old.

Kayaking alone is not a great idea — I always float with friends in case something goes wrong.  I try not to rush down the river, but instead take my time, soaking in the brilliant sunshine and clear water. Sit on top kayaks are easy to use and don’t require much experience. State law requires each person to have a life jacket — I actually wear mine.

Don’t bring glass or Styrofoam coolers, pack out your trash, be respectful of private property. Never drive a vehicle into a river — this is against state law and very destructive of the river bed.  Ask questions of local people or experienced boaters, check the river flow gauges and the weather. Wear sunscreen (I also wear a long sleeved shirt and long pants), because the sun will fry you to a crisp otherwise. Texas Parks & Wildlife has lots of information on their website.
