For the new school year, HISD revamped their school meal menus to give students healthier and tastier options. On the district’s website and corresponding app, parents and students can search for their school and see daily menus along with the nutritional information for each item.

According to Click2Houston.com, the new food offerings have come to fruition thanks to Executive Chef David Husbands. Husbands has expanded the school menu beyond a rectangular slice of pizza and a fruit cup. He’s added tamales, green smoothies, tasty salads, tomato soup with garlic bread, and even jicama sticks. “I think putting this healthy food on their plate is going to help them out a lot in life and hopefully they’ll learn a lot from it,” Husbands told the news.

Additionally, HISD wants to encourage parents who need meal assistance for their kids to not worry about stigma. District Nutrition Officer Bette Wiggins told Click2Houston.com, “Parents, please understand it’s a meal benefit someone is not trying to put a stigma on you. A meal benefit is a way of assuring that whether they are overburdenly needy they have the opportunity for their kids to have a free meal or a reduced meal.” Parents are encouraged to sign up here to see if their family qualifies.
