Astros Fall Short of a World Series Win in Heartbreaking Loss
It’s the Cinderella story of the Washington Nationals that took center stage as they fought their way back to win the World Series Championship for the first time in their franchise history for the nation’s capital. There is a Texas connection we can be proud of with third baseman Anthony Rendon for the Nationals hitting a solo homerun in the top of the seventh to make it a 2-1 game and cutting the Astros lead. Rendon grew up in Houston and played for Rice University. What a sweet victory for him to win in his hometown.
The Astros came out with gloves on with pitcher Zack Greinke dominating inning after inning, not making it easy for the Nationals to score. “I thought he was going to go complete game, the way he was pitching,” Houston catcher Robinson Chirinos said to ESPN. “The pitch count was low, he was hitting his spots. Everything was working for him.” In the bottom of the second Yuli Gurriel, affectionately known as “La Piña,” hit a solo home run as the crowd roared with excitement to put the Astros on top first. With a big 2 RBI in the bottom of the fifth Carlos Correa got in on the action to make it a 2-0 game at that point.
But it was the Nationals that would prove to be the stronger team and come out on top to win the series to the heartbreaking loss of not just the players but an entire city and a crowd that stayed until the very last pitch supporting their team and never losing hope that they could make a comeback like many times before. I think #2 Alex Bregman said it best in a comment to ESPN. “I’m extremely proud to be a part of this team, and proud of every guy in this clubhouse,” Bregman said. “We’ve been knocked down a lot, gotten back up and we just got knocked down today. But we’ll be back for 2020.”
We have no reason to hang our heads over this loss. The Houston Astros gave us an impressive season to reflect back on. They’re team that wears its heart on its sleeves that clearly shows in the admiration the players have for each other and their city, as they give back to the community in many ways throughout the year. They have only just started to show us what true champions they are.
