The Houston Grand Opera (HGO) deserves a big round of applause for their coveted position as a finalist in the Best Opera Company Award category at the International Opera Awards. The award show takes place on May 7th in London, and HGO is the only company from the United States to make the cut. If that didn’t seem impressive enough, Houston CultureMap adds, “HGO is also the only opera company from outside of Europe to be selected by the jury as one of the final six recognized for their excellence.”

The International Opera Awards began in 2012, and the organization raises funds for the Opera Awards Foundation, which helps support rising opera stars. One of the chairs of the International Opera Awards, John Allison, said on their website, “The quality of the nominations—received in record numbers this year—was very high, and I hope our lists prove that for all the difficulties faced by the world’s opera companies, opera is in fact in a healthy and vibrant state.”

Last month, HGO announced a list of their performances for the 2017 – 2018 season which include performances of Handel’s “Julius Caesar,” Bernstein’s “West Side Story” and R. Strauss’s “Elektra.”
