Celebrating its 9th year of cosplay and celebrities coming to Houston, Comicpalooza 2017 will encompass a footprint over 1.2 million square feet at the George R. Brown Convention Center. Featuring exhibit space, gaming, panel discussions, and a “maker’s space,” a highlight the event’s organizer, John Simmons, is particularly enthusiastic about is that Chuck Norris will be participating in this year’s festivities. Norris hasn’t participated in a comic con since 1974, which makes Houston’s event even more noteworthy.

The very first Comicpalooza was held in 2008, and over the years has come to be known as one that gets the A-list celebrities. And although many attendees will be focusing on them as well as cosplay, there are scheduled to be more than 3,000 hours of great things to do, making it the largest pop culture event in the state of Texas. In addition to its broad spectrum of comic con itinerary items, Houston Roller Derby and pro wrestling exhibitions are on the schedule, making way for some true Texas action!

Over three days, from May 12 to 14, visitors to the event will have access to agenda sessions that cover everything in pop culture from the obscure to the trendy. The event will also host a film festival (highlighting Amy Jo Johnson’s ‘The Space Between’), a cosplay competition, PC gaming tournaments, a live art auction, and so much more. The event’s exhibit hall will be filled with vendors specializing in comics, popular games, rare and hard-to-find items, aspiring artists and writers showcasing their work, and exciting artist merchandise. The “Maker’s Space” (exhibiting things such as advanced robotics and a 3-D printer that allows you to make a full-size copy of yourself), as well as the NASA Showcase, will highlight current, ground-breaking technology together with trendsetters from the past, and the children’s area is planned for both learning and fun.

On top of all this, crowds of more than 43,000 have previously reached, and predictions haven’t been made for this year, but celebrity guests from your favorite movies, comics, literature, and TV series are only anticipated to draw more, as they engage with members of the audience, share their stories and answer questions in Q&A sessions. Signing autographs and taking pictures with fans is always a highlight, and one that you can expect will take place again this year. Last year’s event saw stars such as Kate Beckinsale, Sigourney Weaver, and Texas’ own Bill Paxton, and this year’s celebrities are only just starting to be announced. Visit the Comicpalooza website for more information and details regarding the stars that will light it up, and perhaps take the opportunity to go to Houston. You might have a near-Chuck experience!
