If you find yourself along Highway 71 West near Spicewood, after 4 p.m. on a Tuesday through Saturday, strongly consider stopping for dinner at J5 Steakhouse. This restaurant is inviting and holds a perfect balance between casual and upscale. Friday and Saturday can be busy, so it’s best to call ahead or make a reservation. The menu has a variety of options for appetizers, sides, and entrees but not so many the range is overwhelming. Wine and liquor options are diverse and include local crafts. A small bar is located towards the rear of the building, live music is not uncommon.

An appetizer of ahi tuna was shareable between two people, serving as a nice palate prep for the heavier main course. Rack of lamb was subtly sweet and perfectly seared; flavors melded well without a one aspect dominant. It was served with a bundle of asparagus, cooked to maintain crispness and not drowning in butter. They had quite a bit of girth but were still tender. On the other end of the table, the 8 oz. filet was a well-chosen cut of meat and cooked to order as rare. A delightful overall standout of the meal was the roasted cauliflower, which was lightly browned and perfectly kissed with lemon.

Just the right amount
