Everything’s coming up roses for Otto, a Michigan State K-9 officer, who’s been on a winning streak on the job since December. Although luck has nothing to do with it, and clearly it’s all skill. In late 2016, Otto found over 1,000 opioid pills at a traffic stop on Interstate 75 just south of Detroit. Following that, in January of this year, he honed in on $13K in cash which was hidden in a suspected dealer’s car. And on February 15, 2017, he did what he was trained to do. He bit a suspect of whom he was in pursuit of.

He Did What He Was Trained To Do.

At 10 p.m. on February 15, Otto chased a suspect fleeing on foot from the Michigan State Police at another interstate traffic stop. The suspect took off from I-94 in Detroit and hid under a parked van. Otto pursued and found the suspect, where he proceeded to take kicks to the head as a result. So, K-9 officer Otto did exactly what he had been trained to. He bit the suspect. Not unlike the K-9 units here in the state of Texas, Otto has been well-trained, knows his job and does it well, and won’t take any baloney.

In an interview with the Detroit Free Press, Lt. Mike Shaw of the Michigan State Police identified that Otto was repeatedly kicked in the head by the suspect before the K-9 officer retaliated in line with his training. “Otto bit the suspect in the left shin and gained control of the suspect,” Shaw explained. This gave the attending officers the chance to handcuff the suspect. In doing so, the perpetrator became disruptive and had to be pepper-sprayed. The suspect has since been detained at the Detroit Detention Center, and neither Otto nor the state troopers sustained any injuries.
