Texan Diver Kassidy Cook is Headed to the Summer Olympics
Last Sunday, in Indianapolis, Indiana, Texan diver Kassidy Cook earned a spot in the Summer Olympic Games taking place in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil later this summer.
Cook graduated from The Woodlands High School in 2013 and enrolled at Stanford University the same year. She’s been training incredibly hard after becoming injured in 2012 and undergoing surgery on her right shoulder. The injury happened after the 2012 Olympic Trials where Cook barely missed making the Olympic team.
According to Chron.com, these tribulations strengthened Cook. The diver said, “It’s made me mature, made me the person I am today. You discover yourself when you’re dealing with hardships, not when you’re at your highest points.”
Determined not to be “washed up” at 19, Cook returned this year at age 21 to the U.S. Olympic Diving Trials to win the 3-meter competition earning a score of 1,003.65. Abby Johnston took second place with 949.3 points. Johnston, who was part of the team that beat out Cook to attend the 2012 London Olympics, gave Cook an Olympic ring from the games after her final dive.
Once she secured her much-deserved spot on the team, Cook said breathlessly, “I’m at a loss for words. Beyond exhilarated…an unreal moment…will never forget.”
