Light Up the River Walk at the Confucius Wishing Lanterns Event

By  |

Celebrate the Year of the Boar by attending the Asian Festival at San Antonio’s UTSA Institute of Texan Cultures on Saturday, February 9 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., then close out the day by launching a wishing lantern into the San Antonio River. Confucius Wishing Lanterns On The Water is an annual event in which the public casts illumination in honor of loved ones, as well as hopes, dreams, and wishes. This kid-friendly event has free admission and includes Asian music and performances from 5 to 6 p.m. on the center stage at the Shops at Rivercenter and from boats docked in the Convention Center lagoon.

Lanterns must be purchased at the event, starting at 3 p.m., in six different locations at street and river level for $5 each (cash is recommended) or $5.25 sold online in advance until February 6. Advance purchased lanterns will be available for pickup at Samuel Gompers Park. Once received, these lanterns can then be decorated and personalized at one of five areas along the river created for guests. Sunset is at 6:19 p.m. and every participant’s lanterns will be launched together beginning at 6:30 p.m. in two places: the entire Convention Center lagoon and in the Shops at Rivercenter lagoon. Lanterns are eco-friendly and contain a floating LED candle. Over 20,000 lanterns have been ordered for this year’s event!

Port-a-potties will be available, and restaurants along the River Walk will be selling food and drinks to-go. The event will be held rain or shine; if unsafe weather occurs, the event will be rescheduled for February 10 or February 17. If you are unable to make this amazing event, a Parade of Lanterns will occur every night from February 9-23, 7:00-9:00 p.m. with 26-foot long boats carrying enormous illuminated lanterns throughout the downtown portion of the River Walk. Indulge in this cultural celebration along the famous River Walk!
