Little Girl Freaks Out After Asking Ship to Honk its Horn
Even though the video was uploaded in July 2012, YouTube user Tobias Hansson’s post has now reached #23 on the trending list with over 4 million views. The premise is simple. A little girl stands at the end of a dock, motioning for the big ship to honk its horn. Once the anticipation builds up, the boat finally obliges with several loud honks. The sounds are obviously much louder than the little girl was expecting, and she retreats upon hearing the booming alerts.
It’s only a 30 second clip, but it’s a fun reminder of the often forgotten childhood activity of making a “honk the horn” gesture to trucks while on long car rides out on the highway. The gesture involves putting ones hand in a fist and pulling it up and down around eye level. The origin of this motion has been speculated on websites like Yahoo Answers. One user believes that it’s inspired by how horns are honked on trains, and another says it resembles pulling a chain to honk like on old semi-trucks.
No matter the origin, the video preserves a moment that little girl won’t soon forget. Only time will tell if she gets the nerve to try the “honk the horn” gesture again.
