Do You Want to See a Live Music Act While You Fly?

No, this isn’t old news leftover from April Fools Day. Southwest Airlines recently announced a partnership with Warner Music Nashville to bring live music acts to the air with an expansion of their concert series known as “Live At 35.” Southwest began the series in 2011, and says “…the Live at 35 series has only grown in popularity over the past six years, as Southwest passengers hope that their flight will be one of the lucky ones to feature a sure-to-go-viral performance.” But news outlets like Texas Monthly are skeptical about the set-up, and social media didn’t seem too thrilled about the idea either. Like @Reverend_Scott tweeted, “I’d rather walk.”

Texas Monthly points out that a live band isn’t exactly what travelers want. The problems that come with flying aren’t usually a lack of entertainment since people normally have electronic devices and books with them. Quiet and an increased amount of space are certainly more sought after commodities on a plane, but The Dallas Observer says that travelers are surprisingly receptive to the concert series. They wrote that they found many tweets from past Live at 35 events (which only last about 15 minutes) where Southwest passengers rave about the experience. “Best flight I’ve ever been on! How fun!” @gatorjuls wrote. “SUCH A TREAT!” @nadinengela echoed. Perhaps skeptics should reserve their judgments until they experience a musical flight for themselves!
