The iconic faces of Tommy Lee Jones and Robert Duvall as Captain Woodrow F. Call and Captain Augustus McCrae, respectively, is enough to rev up any New Year celebration. And winding down this wild and wooly 2016 while binge-watching a television mini-series that brought the history of a few fictitious, yet still admirable, Texas Rangers into our homes is never a bad thing.

An epic western adventure that needed so many twists of fate to actually happen first made its way into the hearts of its admirers in February of 1989 on CBS. The possibility of Larry McMurtry having never written the story, and that of James Garner in the role of “Gus” McCrae instead of Duvall, and finally of John Wayne being convinced not to participate in the project at a much earlier date and time, all conspired to develop the project when and how it happened, and we’re grateful that this was the case.

At a time when the Western genre in film and on television had, in effect, been considered dead, the Lonesome Dove miniseries captured a viewing audience of twenty-six million homes throughout the U.S. alone. The series, consisting of Part 1: Leaving, Part 2: On The Trail, Part 3: The Plains, and Part 4: Return, wound its way from Texas to Montana and back again, as the characters and their determination did within the hearts of the audience.

An iconic supporting case including Danny Glover, Ricky Schroder, Diane Lane, Robert Urich, and Anjelica Huston, to name only a few, brought the miniseries to life and leant more than just a bit of period reality to the movie. They leant it the ability to unfold as McMurtry had written it and director Peter Bogdanovich had envisioned it. Enjoy the Lonesome Dove miniseries presentation on Encore Westerns December 30, and close off your own 2016 miniseries in style.
