When Matthew’s dad James “Pop” McConaughey passed away in 1992, it really shook up the young actor. He was filming his first motion picture and was just trying to keep it together. One day, the words “Just Keep Livin'” popped into his head and they became a mantra to, well, just keep livin’. Those words would help him carry on through good times and bad.

In 2008, he and his wife Camila decided to form the just keep living foundation in honor of James. The logo even his a photo of Pop in it. The foundation is dedicated to “empowering high school students by providing them with the tools to lead active lives and make healthy choices for a better future.” With chapters throughout California, Texas, Louisiana and Washington D.C., the foundation is making huge strides in educating students about the importance of fitness, wellness, service and nutrition. Locally, the foundation has partnered with the San Antonio Spurs’ Silver and Black Give Back Organization to further their mission here in Texas.

He really loves his mama.

He calls her every Sunday. He sends her flowers every Valentine’s Day. He takes her to red carpet premiers and award shows. He even finds small parts for her in his films. Yes, Matthew McConaughey does indeed love his mama. Perhaps it’s because Kay McCabe, now 83, had him believe for over 30 years that he won the 1977 Little Mr. Texas contest. Or perhaps it’s because she never allowed him to be negative. “You come in here when you’re ready to see the rose in the vase and not the dust on the table,” she’d admonish if he woke up and went to the breakfast table in a bad mood. Either way, the love and admiration Matthew has for his mom is apparent and we love him even more for it.
