Today, the cottage and surrounding grounds are often the sites of weddings and special events. Visitors to the park can wander the shady gardens with around two dozen peacocks, some of which are descendants of the original pair.

In the gardens, ponds dotted with lily pads are homes to turtles lazing on exposed rocks. Native plants and flowers infuse the peaceful gardens and the curvy mulch-covered paths invite guests to meander with the birds. Folks with a green thumb are encouraged to adopt a garden or volunteer to help out with gardening chores.

In addition, to the two-acre cottage and stone fenced area, an additional 21-acre nature preserve offers the opportunity for longer hikes. The nature preserve is in a state of constant improvement as the Friends of Mayfield Preserve work to remove invasive plant species and restore the area’s native environment.
