The Mesquite Police Department celebrated National Hat Day (January 15th) by adding a new element to their uniform – a Resistol black straw cowboy hat. Fox 4 News report that the straw cowboy hat beat out the other options like a “drill sergeant-style hat.” Obviously, this quintessential Texan accessory could not be passed up.

Police officers receive a standard hat when they join the force as part of their uniform, but the Mesquite PD wanted to add the new option for $46 a piece as part of their yearly budget. The Mesquite Texas City Hall Facebook page quotes Chief Charles Cato as saying, “We have 180 of 220 uniformed police officers who have chosen to wear the new cowboy hat in the field as additional protection from various weather elements. This cowboy hat is a benefit the police officers asked for, and I am grateful the City of Mesquite was able to provide it.”

It isn’t mandatory for the Mesquite officers to sport the new hats, but who could resist putting it on when they look so sharp and perfectly Texan? Residents seem to agree that the addition looks stylish and professional. Tressa Wilson commented, “Looks great. Somehow shows more strength.”
