New Micro-Hospital to Open Up in Horizon City Near El Paso

By  |

In Horizon City, Texas, southeast of El Paso, the area’s first micro-hospital is slated to open up on September 6, 2017. According to the El Paso Times, the facility will be part of The Hospitals of Providence. The area isn’t populated enough to warrant a huge hospital, but a good medical facility with an emergency room (ER) is needed.

The Times writes that the micro-hospital will have eight exam rooms in the ER, and an inpatient area with five rooms on the other side of the building. Also, doctors will have access equipment like a lab and Computed Tomography (CT) scanner.

But what exactly is a micro-hospital? As explained in an article in Becker’s Hospital Review, to be dubbed a micro-hospital the location should be an “independently licensed [facility] with acuity comparable to a community hospital, but at a fraction of the size…with only about eight to 15 beds…The buildings range in size from about 30,000 to 60,000 square feet because they often function as a ‘healthplex’ and include ancillary service lines and physician offices.”

When micro-hospitals are built in smaller, growing communities, doctors are able to provide patients with friendly, in-depth care. The idea of a “mini” hospital is still new to patients, but the personalized, calm environment is expected to help many people in the Horizon City area.
