Ice Land in Moody Gardens, at Galveston, Texas will open up on November 11 and run through the holiday season, but preparations have already begun! ABC 13 reports that on September 29, renowned ice carvers from China arrived in town to start carving breathtaking designs out of two million pounds of ice that will enchant visitors this year. The news explains that it will take them 43 full days (they will work in shifts) to manipulate the ice into reflecting this year’s theme, “Rainforest Holiday.”

Video from last year’s Ice Land installation (taken by Dan Kebinos) shows that Ice Land was a family-friendly experience to remember where partons borrowed blue snow jackets to endure the cold temperatures that many Texans aren’t accustomed to. Use of lights and dyes shade the ice to create incredible representations of creatures, like sea turtles and dolphins, and architecture, like otherworldly castles. Also, there were ice slides that people could bravely take a trip down as long as they didn’t mind a cold bum. At the end, there’s even an ice bar!

If you’re curious about the artists’ progress, check out the live webcam set up at Moody Gardens here. Their description says to expect “…monkeys, beautiful birds, incredible butterflies, colorful orchids and so many wonderful creatures…” this year.
