More to Love at McKinney Falls State Park

The historic site of McKinney Falls is no secret to most residents of the Texas Hill Country, and its Onion Creek falls are almost as iconic as the state capitol building itself.

Located just thirteen miles from the Capitol, in a thickly-wooded region of Austin, McKinney Falls boasts 81 campsites and nearly nine miles of hike and bike trails. It opened in 1976 on the former site of the Thomas F. McKinney homestead, and ever since then has been a favorite place of ours to visit for recreational activities.

And now more than ever nature lovers have more to love, including a Basics of Outdoor Photography course and Geocaching treasure hunts to go along with fishing out of the creeks and views of Old Baldy, a 500-year-old cypress tree positioned right along one of the trails.

“We have an outstanding trail system here at the park,” Ranger Jeff Hershey says in the video. “One of my favorites is the rock shelter trail… I’d just encourage those who’ve not been to McKinney Falls to go ahead and pack their bags and make the trip, because it is well worth the experience.”
