Those who are a regular feast for the most annoying of insects, the mosquito, know that they’re already out in full force this year, constantly looking for their next victim. According to Terminix, Texans have a good reason to complain about these pests. When looking at their mosquito service data, Terminix says that four major Texas cities rank in the top 20 of the “most infested cities in America.”

The DFW area takes the top spot on the list, Houston follows at number two, and San Antonio finishes out the top three. Austin ranks down at number eight. Surprising, the first Floridian city (Miami) on the list takes the fifth spot.

Mostly, geography is to blame for Texas’s high rankings. As MyStatesman explains about Austin, “The city is at a latitude enough south that spring and summer are characterized by mosquito-friendly temperatures. Prevailing southeast winds carry tropical humidity into Central Texas. Such moisture, combined with the warmth, makes it easier for mosquitoes to breed.”

What can Texans do to fight what feels like a losing battle? KSAT provides the following tips:

“1. Remove sources of standing water.

2. Clean out the gutters.

3. Change water sources weekly.

4. Replace outdoor lighting.

5. Seal and screen entry points.”

Good luck, fellow Texans, on not becoming a mosquito’s next meal!
