Today, the students take care of four small gardens growing a variety of plants including squash, tomatoes, peppers, beans, cucumbers, and marigolds. A few old whiskey barrels cradle strawberries or herbs. “In the past, we’ve planted potatoes, okra and more,” says Krueger.
Four or five students come by with their teacher each day during the school year and help out caring for the garden. Krueger teaches the kids about the different plants and how to keep the garden thriving. “We want the kids to experience as much as possible with our limited space,” Krueger says.
Krueger believes the real winners are the students. The kids learn the joy of planting and caring for the plants as they grow. Then they get to pick and eat the fruits of their labors. Krueger says, “This is a true win-win experience with incredible benefits!”
