Just under two hours after saying their vows, a newlywed couple perished in a tragic helicopter crash near Uvalde in the Texas Hill Country. The Bell 206B helicopter went down in the early morning hours of Sunday, November 4, 2018, on the Byler family ranch. The pilot was reportedly a Vietnam veteran named Gerald Green Lawrence, and his newlywed passengers were Will Byler and Bailee Ackerman. None of them survived the deadly crash.

The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating the tragedy, and the San Antonio Fire Department also deployed ten units on scene to aid investigators. The newlyweds, both in the last year of college and both 23, boarded the helicopter and took off just an hour and a half after their marriage ceremony. Friends and family are reportedly devasted by the tragedy.

A wedding guest shot video of the couple’s departure on the helicopter, following their fairytale wedding. News of the crash was broken by The Houstonian, a newspaper at Sam Houston University, the couple’s college. Will Byler was a student of agricultural engineering, and Bailee Ackerman studied agricultural communication.

By all accounts, the couple’s love for each other was readily apparent to everyone who knew them. One wedding guest wrote in a social media post, “Bailee & Will – I hope I find a love as true & wonderful as yours. Our hearts hurt now, but we know this is not forever.” A statement from the wedding website company The Knot read: “Our deepest sympathies and thoughts are with this family at their great loss.”

Words can hardly describe the depth of this tragedy. Perhaps some degree of comfort can be found in the fact that the couple spent their last day in this life celebrating their love and commitment with their family and friends at their side.
