Back in January of this year, Austin Eater wrote that Uchi and Uchiko owner Tyson Cole of the Hai Hospitality restaurant group planned on opening a Japanese smokehouse named Loro at 2115 South Lamar Boulevard, just down the street from Uchi. He decided on the name Loro for no overarching reason, he says he simply “…love[d] the look of it and how it looks like a race car or motorcycle. And that it’s a stunningly colorful wild parrot.”

Now, Austin 360 writes that Cole has teamed up with Aaron Franklin of Austin’s famous Franklin Barbecue to make Loro even more of an epic restaurant that’s highly anticipated by Austin foodies. Their future delicious dishes will “…center around grilled and smoked meats, with the culinary team applying the Uchi style and flavor profiles to meat dishes and inventive sides.” Uchi has been experimenting with smokehouse flavors with their small Green Egg smoker kept in the backyard of the restaurant for three years, and with the addition of smoked meat master Franklin, Loro is sure to get off to a great start.

Loro will open its doors in the first quarter of 2019. The smokehouse will use post oak, which Franklin says will “…taste like Central Texas.”
