Weird and Wonderful Pizza Acrobatic Routines Dazzle Audiences

Tony Gemignani describes his skill as “what a Harlem Globetrotter does with a basketball.” As seen in Great Big Story’s video, Gemignani is champion when it comes to pizza in terms of business, tossing, and acrobatics. That’s right, Cirque Du Pizza exists, and it’s one unique sight to behold.

According to pizza.com, the World Pizza Championships takes place once and year and includes a highly competitive acrobatic contest where skillful people wield a mass of dough by spinning it around their hands, tossing it over their heads, weaving it through their legs, or executing any other moves the dough-dancer can dream up. As a team leader, Gemignani has won a record number of titles for himself and his team.

Though it may seem like pizza acrobatics would be such a niche hobby that there wouldn’t be many participants, the sport is surprisingly wide-spread and highly competitive. Since preparing for World Pizza Championships takes hours and hours of practice, participants desired an artificial dough alternative, to save the real, precious dough for tasty pizzas. Carry Hot has invented “practice dough,” a glow-in-the-dark silicone-based goo perfect for acrobatics. Of course, when it comes to the actual event, nothing will replace the real deal.
