Plano Senior High Says Graduates Aren’t Allowed to Wear National Honor Society Regalia

Has Plano Senior High gone too far? They’ve banned graduates from wearing their National Honor Society regalia for fear it will “exclude” students.

The National Honor Society is a decades-old organization in high schools across the country and it takes an awful lot of hard work to be accepted while in high school. The NHS celebrates students who have gone above and beyond while in high school not only in the classroom, but in their community through volunteering hours and sportsmanship activities. Now, Plano Senior High School is saying that no NHS regalia is allowed to be worn at graduation.

As 12 News Now is reporting, the school released a memo that forbids students from wearing any club or organization regalia for fear of excluding other students. However, parents of members of the NHS are speaking out against this rule.

National Honor Society “members frequently wear white satin stoles with an NHS seal during graduation ceremonies to mark their commitment.” As one mom, KellyAnn Frederick says, “They worked hard for it. If you choose not to work hard, then that’s okay! I wasn’t an NHS kid. I didn’t wear the NHS stole when I graduated. But friends of mine did, and I was OK!”

We think Mrs. Frederick makes an awful lot of sense, and these graduates should be able to proudly show their accomplishments on graduation day, like kids all across the country are allowed to do.
