Hubbard Police Officer Saves 82-Year-Old Man from House Fire
Around 4 a.m. on May 11, Sammie Burgess awoke to smoke engulfing his mobile home. A Hubbard police officer arrived on the scene and kept the confused man from going back into the flames.
As KWTX reported, Burgess awoke in the middle of the night to flames engulfing his mobile home. Hubbard police officer, Theodore Monthey, was the first to arrive on the scene and did so just as Burgess was starting to walk toward his home in flames.
From shock, Burgess was confused and was determined to go back into his home of 25 years. Monthey told KWTX, “I got him to his feet and attempted to try and walk him to the road…I just picked him up and carried across where my car was and down the road where I knew he would be safe.”
Burgess lost everything except the clothes on his back, a detail the Monthey did not forget as the next day, he donated clothes and a pair of sneakers to the elderly man. Burgess lost his motorized wheelchair in the fire, and is a diabetic. He’s thankful to be alive, but is reeling from the loss of his possessions.
A donation account for Sammie Burgess has been set up by his sister, Katie Simmons, for his needs at the Citizens State Bank in Hubbard. He wears a 32/31 in pants, a medium in men’s shirts, and a size 11 in men’s shoes. If anyone wishes to donate anything, they can also call Katie Simmons, (254) 205-7251.
