Prince Charles and Camilla Crack Up During a Inuit Singing Performance
When Prince Charles and Camilla visited Canada last week, the lengthy trip abroad finally got to them and they ended up cracking up at an inopportune moment. While listening to a pair of Inuit throat singers performer in Iqaluit, Camilla found herself unable to control a fit of the giggles. When she turned toward Charles trying to stifle her laughter, he started laughing, too.
But what cracked the royal pair up is really an incredibly interesting form of singing that’s worth a closer look and listen. According to the Inuit Cultural Online Resource, “The songs are sung as a friendly competition; played as a game. One person sets the rhythm, the pace the sound and the other follow. The first person to outlast or not laugh is the winner, as each song tends to end in laughter.”
In a video posted by Alaska Dispatch News, you can hear the nature-inspired sounds uttered by the two women only a half second apart. It’s memorizing to listen to, and it’s definitely a skill that the performers must practice hard to master. “You have to make sure you’re breathing out as much as you’re breathing in or else you might get lightheaded,” one woman explains.
