Autumn is just around the corner, which means the return of all things pumpkin spice! From famous lattes to seasonal specialties, pumpkin has quickly become the official flavor of fall. Although pumpkin spice marketing may have gone overboard in recent years, with items like pumpkin spice potato chips and chewing gum, fall is still a great time to incorporate pumpkin into some new and delicious recipes, like this delectable gooey butter cakes recipe from Food Network icon Paula Deen.

When it comes to delectable Southern cooking, Paula Deen is queen! This recipe for Pumpkin Gooey Butter Cakes has rave reviews on foodnetwork.com and are a quick, simple, and delicious alternative to traditional pumpkin pie.

Ingredients:

Cake:

  • 1 package yellow cake mix
  • 1 egg
  • 8 Tbsp butter

Filling:

  • 1 (8 oz) pkg. cream cheese
  • 1 (15 oz) can pumpkin
  • 3 eggs
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • 8 Tbsp. butter
  • 1 (16 oz) box powdered sugar
  • 1 tsp. cinnamon
  • 1 tsp. nutmeg

Instructions:

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
  2. Combine the cake mix, eggs, and butter. Mix well. Pat the mixture into the bottom of a lightly greased 13×9 pan.
  3. In a separate bowl, beat the cream cheese and pumpkin until smooth. Add the eggs, vanilla, and butter. Beat together. Add the powdered sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Mix well.
  4. Spread the pumpkin mixture over the cake batter. Bake for 40-50 minutes. Do not overbake – center should be slightly gooey. Serve with whipped cream.
