The quaint, historic town of Comfort is situated nicely in the Texas Hill Country. It’s central to places such as Kerrville, Fredericksburg, and Boerne, several scenic drives surround the area, including the half-hour trip to San Antonio. A nice little nucleus in the heart of the Hill Country, it features close to 100 historic buildings, many of which were built prior to 1910. Seven of these were designed by the famed architect Alfred Giles. As such, much of Comfort has been designated a National Historic District.

Comfort has a business district that appeals to the small-town Texas tourist in all of us. Here, you’ll find yourself among several vibrant restaurants, antique stores, and bed and breakfasts. There’s also a small group of wineries that have made Comfort their home, allowing for some great times in tasting rooms with friendly and knowledgeable staff.

There are also a variety of outdoor activities that many take advantage of locally. Mountain biking is readily available at the Flat Rock Ranch, and some great rounds of golf can be had at Buckhorn Golf Course. Those interested in exploring can also visit the Cave Without a Name, which quite possibly could be one of the most beautiful caverns in the Lone Star State. Camping is available along the banks of the Guadalupe River, where there is also opportunity to swim and fish.

Those requiring some refinery can visit Hotel Faust, a two-story boutique hotel that has been recognized as the “crown jewel” of Comfort. With more than 135 years of history, this 19th-century hotel features limestone walls cut 20-inches thick, and ceilings at 14 feet high. Its spacious porches have comfortable rockers for enjoying the weather and views, and this elegant hotel has been outfitted with all the modern conveniences for guests’ pleasure and… comfort. The Hotel Faust definitely stands out as a Texas State Historic Landmark.

Comfort also has some noteworthy and delicious dining opportunities to enjoy. High’s Café and Store boasts a fantastic meal together with a cup of freshly ground coffee, one of its blends from around the world. Comfort Pizza is also an excellent eatery, located in a fascinatingly refurbished filling station. The pizza you can purchase there is as much a work of art as the renovation work on this establishment. They also feature craft sodas on their menu, such as a prickly pear cactus drink!

There is so much more to see and do in and around the Texas Hill Country town of Comfort that one visit just won’t cover it all. The Treue der Union Monument is located here, for those who have a history itch that needs scratching. The town is home to one of just two bat roosts in America, at the Albert Steves farm. The roost was constructed in 1918 and designed in a shingled pyramid shape, standing 30 feet in height. This too was designated a Texas State Landmark and has been included on the National Register of Historic Places. This town has a lot to offer those who are looking for a place to unwind, learn, and relax. Expand your horizons while you stretch your legs here in the Hill Country and enjoy such historic settings as can be found in modern-day Comfort.
