Earlier this month, Tejano musician Richard Ramirez, 50, passed away after a show with his band Eddie Gonzalez y Grupo Natural. Ramirez was singing back-up when he suddenly collapsed. Tragically, MySA.com reports that he passed away a short time after. He had been ill for many years with kidney failure.

Ramirez was once Gonzalez’s security guard, but Gonzalez heard him sing and had him join the band. In addition to his love for music, Ramirez was known for his devotion to the Spurs. He constructed a huge Spurs sign to place outside of his house from discarded materials he bought for only $5. The sign was even featured on NBA.com.

A GoFundMe campaign has been started to assist the family during this difficult time and give “Richard the farewell he deserves.” Community members like Felipe Villarreal are reaching out. Along with his donation, Villarreal wrote, “For someone I’ve never had the pleasure of meeting I would like to wish prayers and the very best for the family of this young man. I was there that night and it’s a night I will soon not forget. God bless.”
