Can you believe that it’s already time to get ready to go back to school? From August 9 to August 11, 2019, families should plan ahead to purchase clothes and school supplies for their kiddos during the Sales Tax Holiday Weekend, also known as Tax-Free Weekend. WFAA 8 says that Texans shopping for back to school gear can save “about $8 for every $100 they spend” on qualifying items.

The Texas Comptroller website sums up the opportunity to save on purchases such as “most clothing, footwear, school supplies and backpacks priced less than $100…which could save shoppers about $8 on every $100 they spend…all sales of qualifying items made during the holiday period qualify for the exemption, including items sold online, or by telephone or mail. Shoppers can use layaway plans to take advantage of the sales tax holiday.”

Of course, there is specific criteria laid out by Texas law as to which exact items will be tax exempt. For example, the category of “backpacks” does not include pieces of luggage, computer cases, nor purses, and there’s a limit of ten or less backpacks that can be bought at once.  If you’re curious about the rest of the criteria, review the official Sales Tax Holiday website.
