Dallas Salon Owner Says She’ll Share Funds With Laredo Businesswomen

A Dallas CBS affiliate has reported an update about that the beauty salon owner who was recently jailed, then released, after defying the statewide order to close her business. When coronavirus restrictions forced the closure of most businesses throughout Texas, Shelley Luther, owner of Salon Á la Mode in Dallas, reopened her business in advance of allowances to do so by the state. She was given a seven-day jail term and a hefty fine for violating the orders. However, public outcry resulted in the state supreme court promptly releasing her, as well as the state’s own Lieutenant Governor paying her fine. Since then, the salon owner has stated that she plans to donate a portion of the GoFundMe money that was originally raised to help her cause.

According to the report by the CBS affiliate, Luther has said she will donate some of the money raised for her cause to help Brenda Stephanie Mata and Ana Isabel Castro-Garcia, two businesswomen who had been arrested for opening up their beauty services in their Laredo homes, also in violation of a stay-at-home order in Webb County. In addition to helping them pay their fines, Luther has offered to cover their attorney fees, as well as provide some seed money for their businesses, according to the press.

The two Laredo businesswomen were both arrested on April 15, alleged to have offered beauty services from their homes. This was in violation of emergency pandemic orders. They were released on bond that day. They were mentioned by Governor Abbott following his modification of the executive orders this past Wednesday, May 6, 2020, which would eliminate jail time for those who violate such orders. Luther feels strongly that had it not been for her public fight, businesses such as barbershops and salons wouldn’t be allowed to reopen again until May 18, 2020 (10 days later than they now have been, since the change), explaining that she had to do what she believed was right.
