According to their website, the “ATPE firmly believes all Texas public school students, parents, and employees deserve to have a clear understanding of the minimal protections and protocols their local school districts will put in place to address their health and safety.”

With no recommendations issued from the Texas Education Agency, many districts have a muddy return-to-school plan. The TEA’s silence on the issue is concerning for some education officials and Texas teachers, while the State Agency has stated that STAAR and TELPAS testing will continue during the 2020-21 school year.

In response, the ATPE’s strongest recommendations come in the form of advocating for the safety of Texas teachers and students. The organization is also calling for TEA to suspend TELPAS and STAAR testing. The other major focus is to include community members in the decision-making and planning of an unprecedented school year ahead and for districts to offer a clear method of communication and execution.
