Section of Highway 290 Named After Fallen Austin Officer

In 2013, Officer Clay Crabb passed away on Highway 290 West while checking for flooding and low water crossings when his vehicle hydroplaned.

This portion is now officially called the Lt. Clay Crabb Memorial Highway in honor of his service and memory. On October 16, 2013, Crabb’s vehicle hydroplaned toward oncoming traffic, as KVUE reported, when he lost his life in a collision.

His wife, Anne Crabb, and his children survive him, and were present at the ceremony at the Texas Capitol where the Texas Department of Transportation unveiled the sign which will go between Austin and Dripping Springs.

It’s been a hard three years since as Crabb’s children were so young when their father passed away, but as Anne told KVUE, “It’s been challenging…the four-year-old at the time, Ronin, remembers that he didn’t get to say goodbye to daddy.”

However, now each time the family drives that stretch of highway, they will remember a loving father, a devoted dad, and an upstanding citizen who loved his job and the city he served.
