Sisters Create a Beauty Salon Days for Cancer Patients

A documentary shown at popular film festivals in America called “Mondays at Racine” highlights a salon in Long Island, New York that provides free services for women with cancer.

The Racine Salon encourages women undergoing chemo to stop by on the third Monday of each month to take some time for themselves. They aim to give these women a bit of normalcy and beauty in their lives, which have been turned upside down from disease.

In the trailer for the film, one woman expressed that she didn’t like seeing her hair loss in the mirror as it’s symbolic of cancer. Furthermore, “It’s like your hair is part of your identity, you’re being erased.” Another woman tearfully stated, “It’s just another change in my body I don’t have any control over.”

The acts of kindness from sisters Cynthia and Rachel at Racine Salon help to lift some of the burden and secrecy of chemotherapy’s effects. The idea of offering free services has spread through the industry with the Mondays at Racine Cancer Care Foundation’s charter program. Now any salon can learn how to offer proper shaving techniques, gentle hair care or lash and brow services to women going through chemo.
